The conference theme was: "Biobanks, Advancing Science and Serving Society in the 21st Century". The conference featured invited speakers, contributed papers, poster presentations, a poster discussion session, corporate workshops and working group meetings. and vendors exhibits.
The Red Nacional de Biobancos meeting took place on the morning of Wednesday 7th November.

| 17:30 - Workshops
(1) Introducing automation in biobanks - experiences from user perspective. Chaired by Gunnel Tybring and Marcel Bruinenberg. The aim of this workshop was to present the way automation has been implemented in some representative biobanks, followed by an interactive discussion where participants shared their knowledge and experience. Topics covered included: Laboratory automation, Automated Storage and LIMS solutions. Speakers included: Päivi Laiho, Kristian Spreckley, Dominic Allen, Steven Smit, Marcel Bruinenberg, Gunnel Tybring
(2) Emerging countries workshop. Chaired by Rita Lawlor and Erik Steinfelder. Speakers also included Rupert Langer and Maimuna Mendy. The workshop followed the Ideas Lab format and featured a series of topics to kick off interactive subgroup discussions aimed at answering a number of key questions. Topics included: feasibility of biobanking; lack of pathology; problems of infrastructure; protecting local patrimony. |

This session included ESBB election results, awards and news about society initiatives. There was an opportunity for open discussion with the membership.

Large scale projects involving genomic and other -omic analysis of samples present a number of challenges from the biobanking perspective. Presentations from the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN) and the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC).

The gala dinner was held at the Carmen de los Chapiteles. For entertainment during the dinner there were live performances of Flamenco dancing.

Alhambra Guided Tour - Friday pm
The Alhambra or “red fortress” was constructed in the mid-14th century by the Berber rulers of Granada. It contains a number of palaces and courtyards with fountains and reflecting pools designed to fit descriptions of Paradise in Islamic poetry.
